Windows 8 Secrets: Modern Reader

Part four in a series of co-posts by Windows 8 Secrets co-authors Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott.

There are two big pieces of news in today’s revelation. First, Microsoft will apparently be including its own PDF reader in Windows 8. And second, this is the first app we’ve discussed that utilizes the new AppX application package type.

Modern Reader (displaying Windows Phone 7 doc.)

The application itself is simple enough. It displays PDFs in full fidelity, as you’d expect. You can zoom in and out, and there’s a page scrubber on the side of the application window for document navigation.

If you jump ahead using the scrubber, a Back button appears in the upper left corner so you can return to your previous spot. It also supports side-by-side page views.

Of even more interest, perhaps, Modern Reader is the first actual AppX application we’ve uncovered. AppX is a new type of packaged application model in Windows 8, and it very closely resembles Windows Phone 7 application packages. For this reason, we surmise that the AppX application type could be common to both Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 (codenamed “Apollo”), providing developers with a way to write applications that target and can transition between a variety of devices, including traditional PCs, tablets, and phones.

One package for Windows 8, Windows Phone 8 and Tablet — very smart.

I wonder how these AppX application types will be distro’d ;)

Hopefully there will be a desktop equivalent as well.

    it’s like windows phone 7

Love it – if this is real I finally see some signs that MS is waking up and bringing it’s awesome ideas together across the screens.

Wondering if a pdf reader would actually be shipped with Windows 8, or if this is an example appx, one that would be installable in an RTM version?

  • contextfree

Anything that results in fewer people feeling obligated to install Adobe Reader is good news.

It would be good if these AppX packages were fully portable (not using registry keys or %APPDATA%, etc), so you can carry them on a USB flash drive.

It would be good if the registry could die, something that was promised to us a long time ago but hasn’t come to fruition.

I’d also rather have the ability to have Explorer display the metadata of PDFs out of the box. Because of the lack of a property handler for PDF files, in Vista and 7, PDF tags can’t be viewed/edited in Explorer.

    awesome!

Please Ms, just allow us to add tags to files in Explorer!

    • Georgios Kasselakis

You can actually do that since vista. Click on a file and then look at the properties at the bottom pane.

This is about pdf, so he meant pdfs. We want to label them and see their properties in the botton pane and specially in Details view.

    I think very useful

    I’d like epub support too.

Nice find Rafael . Are you allowed to leak stuff like this? I feel sorry for Microsoft they”ll have nothing to announce at PDC if you keep this up.:)

As a tablet user, I so sincerely hope they add inking and highlighting support. The only really great software for inking on PDFs costs over $100, and it’s a little slow to load pages. Props to MS for their own reader!

I agree. Adobe Reader is pretty basic, and with how ubiquitous PDFs have become, it’s time for a more modern reader with better features and look.

It’s about time that Windows got it’s own PDF reader! Mac OS X has had Preview (which reads, creates and annotates PDFs, as well as image files) for the past 10 years.

More importantly PDF rendering is built into Mac OS X system-wide. For example you can read a PDF in the Finder without using any other application.

Will Windows 8 have PDF rendering system-wide, or is it in the reader only?

    • Garth

Actually Windows already has that, you can search and read from within a file.

I can see a Microsoft App store coming as well with these AppX application types.

Great!, I think Microsoft should buy Adobe or at least the right licenses PDF format
