Windows 8 Secrets: Welcome Screen

In the first of what will be a long series of co-posts unveiling specific new Windows 8 features, we present the new Windows 8 Welcome screen. This is based, quite clearly, on the Windows Phone 7 lock screen and is just as attractive. This new Welcome screen is only partially configurable, from what we can tell so far: You can only change the background image. The display includes the time, day of week, the date (month and day), and icons for power management (for portable machines only) and ease of access. Perhaps more will be added or present on other device types in the future.

New Windows 8 Welcome Screen (LogonUI)

Welcome Screen, pre-beta Windows 8 builds

Aside from the functionality that is exposed in the currently leaked builds, there is evidence of additional features to come. For example, on tablet-type devices, you’ll apparently be able to logon using a pattern, which we assume is similar to what’s available on Android devices today. Microsoft will also be supporting extensible Welcome Screen-based audio controls, so you can control music playback while the machine is locked.

TIP: This is not an April Fools joke.

  • Chrisb

Hate to ask, but is this real or 4/1 related :(

    • Rafael

      Real.

      • Chrisb

thank you, nice find good sir, cant wait to see what else you discover

  • http://www.tomasmcguinness.com Tomas McGuinness

    Rafael,

Is this from a Windows 8 build you have gotten yourself or are you sourcing this from elsewhere??

    • Kumar S

I wonder how that matters to you….

  • uberlaff

looks mighty fine… mighty fine indeed.

I guess the WP7 tablets are coming.

I hope they’re updating Aero as well… All of the gradients that make up Aero are really going to clash with Metro. (check out the Ease of Access button, it really doesn’t fit)

    April fools, right?

  • http://thounsell.co.uk/ Thomas Hounsell

It does seem to be real actually.

  • kyeahy

Can you tell us how you can change the background image?

  • anonymous

Btw you can logon using a pattern today on Windows 7/Vista if you install the Origami Experience. And Windows 7 added the ability to control volume (Up, Down and Mute) using keyboard volume keys before logon/when locked.

  • http://www.vietlyric.info viet

very nice. i love the new change already. pretty. can’t wait.

  • ChrisLynch

This login screen looks cool. Clean. Simple. Just like WP7. As Anonymous pointed out, Volume Control already exists today with keyboards and Bluetooth headphones. However, it would be awesome if Windows 8 had a Toaster, or a place on the lock screen to see the Album cover image, Artist Name, Track, and playback controls, as this would be useful for true tablets.

  • Cancan

    Oh, sheet!
I hate this picture! Horrible! I would have changed!

  • Reymond P Scene

How immature to pretend to be someone else. without that scary wall it maybe would look like this :) hxxp://bit.ly/e9XBPY

  • anonymous

And what’s “new” about this except that now it’s a temporary login screen? Isn’t the picture already there in Windows 7 as a wallpaper? See http://blogs.msdn.com/b/e7/archive/2009/05/02/a-little-bit-of-personality.aspx

  • anonymous

The only thing that’s new is time and date like those Longhorn builds.

    • Rafael

Glad to see you’re answering your own questions.

  • razionut

    fake fake!!

  • http://techwalker.net mark

    April Fools ?

    • Rafael

      No.

  • Mohit

If it is real, I am amused by the button on bottom left – Accessibility options – seems completely out of place – and actual login and password screen would be more interesting to see – but then again it’s a very preliminary build!

    • Rafael

Well, it’s unfinished yep. Maybe it’ll turn into a cute white button.

      • master

HA! Caught You! “Maybe it’ll turn into a cute white button” Means Editing In Photoshop! I’ve Got Proof.

  • master

Fake! It Is A April’s Fools Joke!

  • http://www.askvg.com Vishal Gupta

Since we all respect Rafael and Paul, I’m going to believe on this thing. But there are a few things which make the thing suspicious:

    1. The background image has been taken after cropping an existing Windows 7 wallpaper image: http://www.askvg.com/download-cute-login-screen-background-image-found-in-windows-8-milestone-build/

    2. The text on screen showing date and time, etc is too much simple and exact copy of WP7.

    3. The Ease of Access button is exactly same as Windows 7 login screen.

All the above things make the whole thing a bit suspicious. ;)

    • tN0

We have seen the cropped image on other leaked screen shots. If you look close enough you see that this image is a bit darker than the original one. On Windows Phone 7 the designers put a black rectangle with 10% opacity on top of images in the UI so that white text is readable.
It looks real to me. But not final.

      ;)

      • http://www.askvg.com Vishal Gupta

I was talking about suspicious only because of April fool’s day. Since the day has passed, I have no doubt in mind now. :)

  • http://info-tran.com Info Dave

Is is me, or is ctrl+alt+delete a funny thing to have to do, just to sign onto a computer? I mean, I get it, but can’t we move passed this?

    • tN0

It’s a feature that can be enabled by the admin. Would make a tablet super-secure!

      ;)

  • http://none.isgreat.org Bqck

A funny joke! Actually, I don’t like this wallpaper anymore :(

  • Timothy Appiah

Everyone saying it’s fake…did you ever stop to think that this shot is cropped? Also, WIndows 8 is in prealpha right now so why would it have new wallpapers already? It’s the windows 7 wallpaper and Rafael clearly just took a shot of this specific part of the new welcome screen…which i find awesome. I’m a fan of the zune/wp7 interface.

    • Rafael

Nothing is cropped, UI is as-is.

  • cuz84d

Zune Desktop Software interface rocks.. I wish that was the model for new UI all over Windows.. even the Start menu should go and be replaced by iOS and Android home screen/application icon model.

  • timiteh

Well first the wallpaper is really ugly.
Second this new logon concept is quite refreshing compared to what we have since at least Windows XP. I hope that this new logon screen is only one of numerous U.I goodies we will get with Windows 8.

  • Diego

Oh, I’ve been saying to put a clock on that screen since at least a decade and a half!

  • Kumar S

I wonder why they’d put on a troublesome three button combination to log on instead of the user-friendly ‘click-the-user-icon’ interface…

Also, Windows has always used a different set of backgrounds with each generation of the OS, so why wouldn’t they do it for this one?

    • http://twitter.com/brockatkinson Brock

      Because this is unfinished.
And on Windows Phone, you can change your lock-screen’s background. Most people probably will.

Also, using Ctrl-Alt-Del is more like a backwards-compatible way of people logging in; they already feel comfortable doing it. For touch-based devices there is probably going to be alternative ways to log on, based on what you choose.

      Your dog.

  • Scott Davis

Looks meh, I think I will continue to enjoy my Linux.

Sorry to disappoint you Rafael, but you’ve been AprilFool’ed yourself. And no, tablet edition of Windows 8 is not going to require pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del.

    • JNP

      Ugly screen . . . yes . . . worse with every version . . . you must be joking!

  • Rushabh

what the hell is that the dumbest background for a welcome screen ive seen that is more of a good bye screen than a welcome screen come on MS we can do better!

    • JNP

      Just Beta and certainly changeable.

  • Eithar

    No liked much?

This is absolutely horrible. NO CTRL ALT DELETE PLEASE. Why does microsoft have to fuck up once they have something right ugh

    • trix

      try crl+shift+esc

    • JNP

Perhaps if you look at the screen more carefully you will see the “Ctrl+Alt+Delete” option . . .

    • Craig R

You can turn it off! Search secpol.msc and click it. Go to local policy. Then go to security options. You can turn it off with “Interactive logon: Do not require CTRL+ALT+DELETE”. Double click it and set the value to true.

I believe the absence of the image is the result of a cease and desist from MS??

  • Liam Self

Why people are complaining about the background image is beyond me… that’s a standard background found in Windows 7, which means that it almost certainly will be customizable…

  • Niklas

this .. “figurine” scared the hell out of me. Looks like my old latin teacher.

And what’s up with the toothbrush (?) in it’s right hand?

  • Mark

    Lets hope they fix
    - Ease of Access – that is make sure it can be permently disabled so that some random key combination hit by accident doesnt invoke it
    - Fonts – so that we can get rid of each and EVERY one of those we dont want…and that ALL that system fonts are not included in some font we do not want (and are in fact stored in a completely seperate folder)…because I DONT speak any asian/arabic/etc language so I dont need any of those fonts installed and I DONT want them either!
    - How about some customisation being returned to us…especially in Windows Explorer so we can easily get back the ability to add the buttons for the commands that we want to access quickly with one click…
