Windows 7 to support new panning options, gestures

Also protected and swept under the carpet, in the Windows 7 PDC ‘08 build (6801), is the ability to configure touch-based panning and gesture options.  This is a no-brainer as Microsoft already announced Windows 7 will feature Microsoft Surface technologies, of which panning is a critical piece. A document was also released yesterday entitled “Developer Enhancements to Windows for Touch and Tablet” with a confirmatory blurb:

Multitouch will support input from multiple touch sources through new window messages, plus a gesture-recognition API that supports panning, zooming, and rotating.

Pen and Touch applet, unlocked panning options

As you can see, all the options are grayed out, likely a result of my old WinHEC-goodie Graphire (Sapphire) tablet not functioning properly in Windows 7. Anyone want to send me an evaluation Tablet PC unit?

Great job. I found this site by accident and have to say that I am glad I did. Great Windows 7 info.

sorry man, but i really dont you understand this. Why not just release a new unlock-tool and let it be tested by the masses?

  3. Ames November 6, 2008 at 11:46 am

He’s working on an unlock tool… just give him time. He’s not getting paid to do this.

  4. Jaryth November 6, 2008 at 12:22 pm

Plus… Im pretty sure he doesn’t want to release something on the masses that could possibly cause major problems with a bunch of tablets… There must be at least some reason why Microsoft locked away these features.

  5. Paul November 6, 2008 at 12:54 pm

huh? which reason was there to lock away the superbar? i think same reason here.

  6. kai November 6, 2008 at 12:58 pm

The superbar was locked because the design wasn’t finalized and all the functions aren’t there. Microsoft doesn’t want people to be evaluating the unfinished superbar in build 6801.

Nice one!, hope tho see some touch monitors soon next year supporting this…
    Buen dia!

Don’t the new HP TouchSmart PCs have multi-touch-enabled displays? Maybe someone with one of those can try it out on there and see if they’re active…

hmm if I touch my belly will it work?

  10. Calvin November 7, 2008 at 12:10 pm

@Mike: If you add a touchpad on your belly.

Why does MS only enable panning gestures for touch input? I would love it if they would enable this for the good old mouse, too. I use the grab and drag add-in for Firefox and I love it – the momentum makes it easy to flick up and down through the page. It’s so much easier to scroll around than with the scoll bar and/or mouse wheel.

In fact, wouldn’t it be awesome if MS made it so that everything – scroll bars, windows, icons – basically anything you can drag – had momentum? It would give a much more physical ‘real-world’ feel to the OS…

The unprotect tool is on its way. Are we in a rush?

  13. Loop November 7, 2008 at 7:16 pm

So Raf..is it gonna be an actual tool this time that does all the work..no command line stuff?

  14. Timothy November 7, 2008 at 7:36 pm

I don’t see what was so hard about copying and pasting the commands he posted. It was not hard at all. If most of you really had trouble with his first tool, maybe you shouldn’t be doing this in the first place.

NextWindow has release multitouch driver for HP TouchSmart PC with Windows 7 here: http://www.nextwindow.com/windriver/download_confirm.html. Without the driver, HP TouchSmart PC can only handle 1 touch.

I’m wondering if you can get all Touchscreen Monitors on Newegg to handle multitouch.

  16. Loop November 7, 2008 at 8:28 pm

    @Timothy
There is nothing hard about doing everything in command line..If you know what your doing at least..Which I do…I was just worried that all the noobs out there like you were talking about would go and screw their installs up and then get all whiny and cause a mess…I guess thats why Raf is taking his time and covering all his bases.

  17. Timothy November 7, 2008 at 8:41 pm

I see what you mean. But it’s kind of annoying to see people posting that it’s not working for them when there literally was only one variable to change in the few commands he posted (changing Rafael’s account name with your own). If they ended up messing up their installs, it’d only be because of their own stupidity…but maybe i’m being too hard on the noobs, lol.

  18. Loop November 7, 2008 at 9:14 pm

lol..yea..gotta give the noobs a break..we were all once a noob

  19. Someone November 7, 2008 at 9:23 pm

Well, if they know how to install Windows 7 then they should know how to change Raf’s name =P

I have a Toshiba M700 Notebook / Tablet PC. I am keen to try Windows 7 on it using a separate hard-drive.

I wonder if the existing Vista touch and pen tablet drivers from Wacom will work in Windows 7 and provide access to multi-touch.

I am thinking that the drivers will work but only in “single-touch” mode.

  21. Ames November 8, 2008 at 1:58 am

Multi touch requires hardware support because the surface has to be able to register multiple points. Most tablets do not support this unfortunately.

  22. Infoholic November 8, 2008 at 5:04 am

    @Ames

Would this require just a driver upgrade to support multi-touch or all new hardware?

  23. Eclypse November 8, 2008 at 5:22 am

Well, been checking back since the 3rd, and still waiting for the new unlocker. But anyway, I was wondering if you know of any way to increase the size of Aero Peek’s live-thumbnail. They are rather small past 1024×768, or if you even just know which file controls Aero Peek besides explorer, if their is one. I know Vista has a thumbnail sizer, but, as predicted, it don’t work on Windows 7 build.

it’s enabled on my Dell Latitude XT tablet, I had to download some pre beta N-Trig drivers made for windows 7 to get the full multi touch, it’s not iPhone smooth yet but it’s there.

  25. Ames November 8, 2008 at 9:52 am

@Infoholic: Depends if the hardware is present or not. Multi-touch is hardware dependent. Some computers (Like the Dell Latitude XT) have multi-touch hardware which just isn’t enabled in the drivers. Others, just don’t have the hardware.

  26. Josh November 11, 2008 at 12:57 pm

    Rafael,

Thanks for unlocking all of this stuff. It makes the build worth testing all the more. Everything was enabled successfully and works great. Keep up the good work.

  27. Hok November 11, 2008 at 8:52 pm

Try using WindowsEnable program to enable all the disable control and see what happen after that :D.

  28. anonymus November 12, 2008 at 7:27 pm

the feed in the desktop slideshow not function?

  29. anonymouse November 19, 2008 at 11:25 pm

yeah doesn’t work on a lenovo x61 multitouch wacom tablet.

I assume the driver factor is very critical to it working and right now there isnt any for it.

I have just one question about all this multi-touch panning stuff.

I have to clean my monitor enough as it is without touching the darn thing all the time.

My mom told me to stop touching it since touching it too much would make you go blind. That remains to be seen, but eating lunch at your desk and then getting KFC grease on your multi-touch panning monitor sounds really yucky!

How will they manage it? Will we all just sanitize our hands continuously with wipes or what?
