After Googling a lot, this is what worked for me: first, I installed the patch WindowsXP-KB971314-x86-ENU.exe, then I uninstalled the XPS Essentials Pack, and finally, tried an older version (1.1 or even 1.0, cannot be sure of that) of the same Essentials Pack. At last, the XPS printer appeared as an available option in the OS. Contrary to the groundless beliefs of the Microsoft fanboys, I did not have to install the overstupid and overbloated dot Net krappwork. I know that I’m too late for the party, but I’d like to share my experience anyway. Found the reason for the problem of leaving the temporary folders (my point 2).
Looking at the custom actions SCUpdateInstallAction, SCLPUpdateInstallAction, EPUpdateInstallAction, WICUpdateInstallAction showed, that they are processed synchronous.
Changing processing to “asynch, wait for” gives the custom action enough time to remove its temporary folder, when done.
